How we teach Phonics at Chase Bridge

In Early Years and Key Stage 1, we base our teaching of phonics on the Letters and Sounds document.  Read Write Inc. is our main teaching tool.  We supplement this with other schemes such as Jolly Phonics and on-line resources, for example, Espresso Phonics, Oxford Owl and Phonics Play.

Phonics is taught through whole class teaching.  For children who require additional support, specific interventions are provided throughout the week.  Class teachers formally assess children’s progress throughout each academic year.

  • In Reception, children are taught Phase 2, Phase 3 and Phase 4.
  • In Year 1, children are taught Phase 5.  They also continually rehearse all the phases taught in Reception.  During the summer term, children’s phonics knowledge is assessed through the statutory Phonics Screening Check.
  • In Year 2, children are taught Phase 6.  The Phonics Screening Check may be repeated in Year 2 for children requiring extra support.
