During the Autumn term Year 3 have had the chance to take part in Strings lessons with the Richmond Music Trust. 3M will be telling you what they have learnt.

As part of our lessons we have had the opportunity to learn how to play the cello, viola or the violin. These are string instruments because they all have strings that are played to make a sound. Unlike the guitar, which has strings, these instuments are played with a bow. Did you know that the bow is made out of hair from a horse's tail?

The four strings of the viola and cello are C,G,D,A and a helpful rhyme to help you remember them is ' Cats Go Down Alleys' while the strings of the violin are G,D,A,E and the rhyme is 'Good Dogs Always Eat'.

The viola and violin look similar and are played by resting them on your shoulder. The difference between them are the strings that they have. However, the cello is much bigger and is played by resting the instrument between your legs. We have found it can be quite uncomforatble to hold your instrument but the more you practise, you will get used to it.

We have had lots of fun learning how to play our instruments with Mr Elliot and it has been exciting to hear all of us playing the music at the same time.

We have learnt how to play, Jig, Manhattan Blues and Twinkle Twinkle Little Bow. Some of us have enjoyed it so much we are now learning how to play during our own lessons with the Richmond Music Trust. We would recommend learning how to play an instrument.

Do you know how to play a strings instrument? Do you know how to use a bow? Do you know how to play any other instruments? Let us know in the comments.

Well done Year 3 - this looks great fun!

That is very interesting 3M. I have not had the opportunity learn a string instrument but can play alittle bit on the piano and recorder. It would be lovely to hear you all play one day. Thank you for all the information.

Sally Cornelius

i hope you had fun playing the instruments!smiley
